We must be genetically hard-wired for that blast of pure heaven. What else could explain the utter abandon with which kids run out the door to chase down the ice cream van, that pied-piper from the 1950s? Just the other day, I ran out to my balcony to track down the creepy music flowing through a thoroughly Saigonese alley. He may have been on a bike with a loudspeaker rather than a van, but sure enough, it was the ice cream man!

In 2015, Guinness surprised any of us that were paying attention by announcing that at the end of 2016, the famous 256 year recipe would be going vegan. Who wants to drink fish bladder with their beer anyway? More recently, Bailey’s has come out with an almond milk alternative to their famous original liqueur. With the final ingredient being Jameson whiskey, we are now ready to mix our own vegan version.

During grad school, I spent my summers as Maria von Trapp from The Sound of Music. My hills were the Pyrenees instead of the Alps. My city was Madrid instead of Salzburg. The kids in my care were Spanish instead of Austrian – and thankfully numbered only three. They learned English from me; I learned joy from them.
